Find the perfect jacket with the right technology, size and material to match your style and needs.
Our softshell jackets are some of our most popular sellers, but many people aren't familiar with what a softshell actually is!
A softshell jacket strikes the perfect balance between protection and mobility. Made from stretchy, breathable fabric, it flexes and moves with your body rather than weighing it down. Whether you’re running errands in chilly weather or keeping your muscles warm before, during or after a workout, a softshell can handle it all.
Composed of three layers—a woven exterior for protection, fleece or pile on the inside for warmth, and a durable, weather-resistant layer in between—softshell jackets offer the protection you need with the comfort you crave.
Softshells are engineered to be lightweight and dynamic, perfect for damp, drizzly or cold days when you don’t want the weather to hold you back. Throw one on in windy or brisk conditions, or during activities where rain is a possibility. These do-it-all companions provide a reliable source of regulation that won’t add weight to your adventure. They’re also easy to fold, pack and travel with wherever your journey takes you.
Some of our exclusive styles feature multiple pockets, machine-washable fabrics and two-way zippers for added versatility. Other designs offer extra warmth with features like chin protectors, detachable hoods, drawstrings for heat retention and soft Butter Pile® lining.
Ready to experience the benefits of a softshell jacket for yourself? Explore our collection here and find the perfect fit for your next adventure!
You shouldn’t have to work overtime—but your outerwear should. Our Free Country 3-in-1 Systems Jacket is built to adapt, providing reliable comfort and protection whether you're skiing, hiking or exploring the great outdoors.
A 3-in-1 Systems Jacket, also known as a System Jacket, offers ultimate versatility by combining two jackets in one. The design features two layers that can be worn separately or zipped together for added warmth and protection. The outer layer is typically waterproof or water-resistant, perfect for wet conditions, while the inner layer provides insulation to keep you warm. Wear each layer on its own or combine them based on your needs.
Many styles include detachable hoods with adjustable drawstrings, giving you even more control over your outdoor experience. Other customizable features include quilted puffer jackets with eco-friendly fill, color-blocking designs and internal/external pockets for convenience.
Thanks to its customizable layering system and durable polyester composition, this jacket is ideal for changing weather conditions throughout the year. The easy zip-on, zip-off functionality, along with Velcro cuffs, allows you to adjust warmth and fit on the go, whether you're tackling a chilly morning or a rainy afternoon.
Ready to gear up for your next adventure? Explore our range of 3-in-1 Systems Jackets and take on the great outdoors with confidence!
A Windshear is our version of the classic windbreaker, but better. Our Windshear Jackets are meticulously designed to be the ultimate year-round wardrobe staple, combining function, comfort and durability in one sleek package. Whether you're braving cold and rainy commutes, embarking on early morning workouts or packing for travel, these jackets have got you covered, quite literally.
Don't let Mother Nature get the best of you. Our Windshear Jackets feature a tested wind and water-resistant outer shell to shield you from the elements, so you can roam freely without worry. The lightweight and breathable design is ideal for outdoor adventures: The weather protection ensures you stay dry and comfortable during unexpected rain showers or gusty winds.
The secret to ultimate comfort resides in our signature linings. You know the saying, "It's what's on the inside that counts"? We agree, which is why we've incorporated specially designed linings to meet your individual needs. Our packable version boasts a lightweight mesh interior that won’t weigh you down, while other styles include a super-soft knit jersey or our signature plush Butter Pile® lining.Â
Windshear Jackets are also practical and low-maintenance. They are machine-washable, making them an excellent choice for those with active lifestyles. No need to worry about special care instructions; simply toss it in the washer, and you're good to go.
Customization plays a key role in our souped-up windbreakers. Depending on the style you choose, you'll find added features such as "invisible" zippers, convenient pockets, a range of hooded options, as well as various lengths. You'll also appreciate the flattering details, like curved and scallop-back hems, plus elastic waists with an adjustable drawstring for both enhanced warmth and a flattering fit.
Ready to get out there? Shop our range of Windshears and find your perfect four-season jacket.
Unfortunately, we do not sell separate liners for our 3-in-1 system jackets. If you're in search of a liner or inner jacket you may purchase a new one. Plus, get a special discount using code: FREE to receive 15% off. Excludes Clearance items.Â
Free Country’s temperature rating is subjective. Since everyone has a different tolerance and comfort level when it comes to temperature, we don’t feel that a temperature rating or ranking of our products can realistically instruct you on how warm or cool a jacket is for your taste. For some, a crisp New York City morning at 55 degrees is quite inviting (especially after a long winter!)—but for others, a morning at 55 degrees is worth a ski parka and a sick day off of work.
When facing nature’s elements, we know that comfort and durability are the most important factors when purchasing a jacket.
Here are some items to consider when assessing the warmth of your jacket to determine the best fit for your needs:
3-in-1 System Jackets: These outerwear overachievers are multi-purpose, highly versatile jackets that give you two layers for the price of one! They feature a customizable zip-on and zip-off system where each jacket can be worn on its own or paired together to create one heavyweight style that lets you glide through winter weather with ease.
Down and Insulated Jackets: Free Country’s down and insulated jackets are cold weather’s perfect match. Our short and full-length designs are ultra-light, exceptionally warm and packable.
Casual Midweight & Work Jackets: These mid-weight styles are the workhorses of the outerwear world. Light enough to not hold you back, but warm enough for any weather.
Fleece Jackets: A Free Country favorite, our fleeces were made for fall. From the super soft Butter Pile® Fleeces to our Sweater Knit Fleeces—there’s something for everyone.Â
Softshell Jackets: With a triple-layer construction, these versatile jackets offer the perfect balance of protection and mobility to keep you warm and dry during any season. They’re made from a lightweight, stretchy, breathable fabric that won’t weigh you down.
Windshear Jackets: The perfect between-seasons staple, our Windshear designs combine fashion and function for a flattering fit for all. The breathable, machine-washable construction also protects you from the elements with tested wind- and water-resistance.
3-in-1 Systems Jackets: With the ability to adjust your warmth as needed, you’ll enjoy all-day comfort, maximum versatility and unbeatable value! The removable inner jacket can also be worn on its own for lighter coverage on warmer days. Shop the collection here.
Down and Insulated Jackets: If you're heading out in cold weather and prefer not to layer up before stepping outside, an insulated jacket may be your perfect solution. For durability and freedom of movement, we recommend down or polyfill insulation jackets. Insulated jackets provide warmth all day long without the bulk of traditional winter coats, keeping you comfortable and mobile as you go about your adventure. Ready to stay toasty without the extra layers? Shop our down and insulated jackets here.
Fleece & Softshell Jackets: Fleece and softshell jackets are our top picks for versatile layering. They provide extra warmth during winter and offer enough protection to wear on their own in transitional seasons like spring and fall. For the best results, we prioritize comfort and durability in our outerwear, no matter the style you choose. Shop our fleece and softshell jackets to find your perfect fit.
Casual, Midweight & Work Jackets: Looking for a cozy jacket to toss on when the temperature drops? We recommend a midweight garment with fleece or quilted lining, but without the insulation of a down jacket. These jackets use soft, heat-retaining materials that keep you warm without trapping excess body heat—perfect for when you're on the move.Â
Midweight jackets are ideal for average chilly days, offering warmth without the bulk, and are great for casual outings or light work, though they’re not designed for extreme weather. Stay comfortable and ready for anything with our midweight options!
When choosing durable, functional outerwear, it's essential to consider your environment and the protection you need. While the difference between waterproof and water-resistant may seem small, it’s crucial. We're here to help you understand these distinctions and decide which option is best suited for your adventures. Waterproof garments provide complete protection from rain and wet conditions, while water-resistant clothing offers a lighter level of defense against moisture. Understanding when to choose each can make all the difference in staying comfortable outdoors.
Waterproof
Fundamentally, a waterproof item of clothing will keep water from getting beneath it. For example, when wearing a waterproof jacket, no water should be able to seep through your outer layer, therefore keeping your lower layers dry, and you comfortable and warm.
Water-Resistant
Water-resistant, however, offers a slightly less complete barricade from rain and other forms of water. If an item of clothing is labeled as water-resistant, it's important to understand that this means the product has the ability to ward off water only to a certain extent. Water-resistant pieces are suitable for light rain, but in heavier downpours, water sports or similarly wet environments, it is safer to opt for a waterproof alternative.
The FreeCycle® collection features outerwear, activewear and swimwear for men and women. Each garment is powered by REPREVE®, which uses recycled bottles and post-industrial waste to create stylish and eco-friendly garments. Plastic bottles are collected, cleaned and converted into high-quality fibers, which are then spun and air-jet textured into yarn. The result is performance-packed fills and fabrics, all applied to our versatile designs that prioritize functionality and comfort. Just one year after launching the FreeCycle® collection in 2019, we saved approximately one million bottles from landfills. To date, that number is at 70 million—and counting!Â

Our Super Softshell® is crafted from the finest yarns to create our softest, most comfortable performance fabric. This three-layer design features a water-resistant membrane bonded to our plush Butter Pile®, offering the perfect combination of function and comfort.
Butter Pile® refers to a soft, cozy fabric with a raised surface of vertical loops, known as pile. These loops give the fabric a plush, three-dimensional feel that is both comforting and great at retaining warmth. Pile fabrics are commonly seen in materials like velvet and corduroy, but the texture can vary depending on how it's woven.
At Free Country, our Butter Pile® is a super-soft, medium-length pile that feels smooth and luxurious—just like butter! This fabric strikes the perfect balance between comfort, warmth and practicality. It's cozy without being bulky and is easy to clean, with most Butter Pile® products being completely machine washable.
You'll find Butter Pile® in a variety of our products, from jacket linings to gloves, blankets and even dog jackets. It’s ideal for colder months or as an extra layer during transitional weather. Plus, our Butter Pile® items are lightweight and easy to pack, making them perfect for travel or winter getaways.

Microtech is a versatile, flexible fabric that adapts to different needs depending on the season and style. Whether you're looking for winter warmth or summer cooling, Microtech helps regulate body temperature, ensuring maximum comfort during any adventure.
At Free Country, we love using Microtech in both our activewear and fleece lines. In activewear, Microtech creates soft, breathable and stretchy garments that move with you, providing unrestricted flexibility. Often blended with polyester or similar fabrics, it also has moisture-wicking and quick-drying properties—drawing sweat away from your body to keep you cool and fresh as you stay active.
In our fleeces, Microtech serves a different purpose: adding warmth and comfort for everyday wear, especially in colder months. The fleeces are soft, cozy and easy to clean, making them a go-to staple when temperatures drop.
Microtech not only enhances functionality with moisture-wicking and warming features, but also provides a subtle, stylish look. Its balance of comfort, durability and performance makes Microtech a Free Country favorite, whether you’re gearing up for an outdoor adventure or relaxing at home.

Most Free Country products are machine washable. Follow these care instructions to keep your gear in top condition:
For the best results, always refer to the care tag located along the inseam of the item.
Most of our items fit true to size, so we suggest you purchase the size you’d normally wear for the best fit. Size charts are generally located under each color option of an item on our site.
If you’re buying a coat, you may size up depending on what layers you plan to wear underneath it, so when the cold chill hits, you can accommodate extra layers to stay warm and comfortable.
Contrary to popular belief, your sleeve length isn’t simply the length of your arm. When designing garments like jackets—especially those with hoods—our designers construct the sleeve to start higher up to accommodate movement in your neck, shoulders and arms. This design ensures maximum comfort and mobility.
That’s why measuring your sleeve length correctly is so important—it helps us guide you to the best-fitting, most comfortable clothing for your body type. This way, your new Free Country apparel will be practical, well-fitted and ready to help you enjoy the outdoors safely and comfortably.
To measure your sleeve length:
You’re going to need a flexible sewing tape measurer or something similar that will be able to bend to your natural shoulder arches. If you don’t have a flexible sewing tape, we recommend getting a large piece of string, and using a marker to indicate the beginning and end of the measurement. You can then hold the string against a sturdy tape measurer to read your numerical length.
We suggest standing with your arms directly by your side, and having someone take the measurement for you for the most accurate reading.
Once ready, place the beginning of the tape at the back and center of your neck.
Trace it over the top of your shoulder, and all the way down to the end of your wrist. Try to trace over the top of the shoulder, not behind along your shoulder blade, as this will manipulate the measurement and make your sleeve length appear somewhat shorter than it is.
Be sure not to measure past your wrist towards your hand, as this will extend the sleeve length and result in sleeves that are too long and impractical. This can also create extra space up to the shoulder, causing the jacket to fit improperly.

Process for Warranty Claims
If we determine your item is covered under the limited warranty, we will guide you on the next steps. No garment will be accepted without a return authorization number. All garments must be laundered according to the care instructions label prior to returning. Unwashed garments will be returned to the sender. When shipping a garment to our customer service department, we strongly recommend using a service such as UPS or FedEx that provides tracking information and writing the return authorization number on the outside of the package. Free Country is not responsible for lost or stolen packages and does not pay for shipping costs.
What to Expect
Upon receipt, Free Country will inspect the garment. If we determine the issue is due to a manufacturing defect, we will, when possible, ship a replacement part for the defective component at our cost, along with returning your original garment. We do not repair garments or pay for garment repairs. If the defective garment cannot be repaired, we will replace it with a new one. If an identical garment is not available, Free Country will replace it with a comparable style and color at our discretion. This process may take approximately 3 to 4 weeks. During our busiest season (October through March), it may take a little longer, and we appreciate your patience.
